it has always been, at least in my view of NYC, that there is a craving here for both. Two cultural pastimes in the city seem to be able to evoke memories of a time when the "neighborhood" thrived in NYC (the old "everyone hung out on the stoop" idea, or the occasional tale from Hell's Kitchen that show up the Sunday Metro section of the Times), and the joy NYC denizens taken in their city having a prominent place on that National/World stage, i.e. the spectacle...or that fact that NYC simply exists as a spectacle outside the deeper contemplation of its own citizens.

still...the Jane Jacobs/Robert Moses battle is one of my favorites in NYC history. I tend to side with the community aspect, even though i'm loathe to be out amongst people and would rather watch them interact behind the smudge window of a dark bar on a sunny day.

I plan to begin tweeting my novel entitled "The Guardian" to RKLOGYprof on Twitter early June. The sci-fi novel follows an archaeologist and her crew as they find an artifact that is not of this world. The plan is to tweet in real time. The novel will play out over the summer as the events unfold on the site.
